Yo-Yo Ma and Katheryn Stott

yoyoMa_08-byStephenDanelian.jpgYo-Yo Ma performed with the Philadelphia Orchestra at the opening of the Kimmel Center, and he brought his ensemble Silk Road here for Kimmel Center Presents. Tonight is his first recital at the Center: he'll be performing alongside his longtime accompanist Kathryn Stott. The program includes classical pieces, but Yo-Yo Ma will also perform two Brazilian pieces from composers Piazzola and Gismonti.

How was the show?

Updated to list Yo-Yo Ma's encore pieces: Salut d'Amour by Elgar and Gershwin Prelude for Rhapsody in Blue

It was pretty close to heaven hearing Yo-Yo Ma play Shostakovich in a room shaped like a cello.
Both performers were ethereal. (@_@)

Terrific performances from both.

Anyone know the names of the 2 encore pieces?

The second encore piece was Mendelssohn's Song Without Words and it was beautiful.

I have loved to watch YoYo on tv for many years. Most recently the opening of the new season at the Kennedy center. When you watch him play,he plays like it comes from within the depth of his soul.Imagine how excited I was to hear he was coming to the Kimmel Center for one night. My husband and I went and were so disappointed. We went wanting to hear the beautiful gentile music you can see on his face when he performs.Instead what we heard was banging on the piano and what sounded like screeching on the cello.I guess the choice of music was for the more discerning music fan.We just went to hear the world renowned cello artist play beautiful music.Beautiful it was not!We left at intermission.

Apparently, the second encore piece was Elgar's Salut d'Amour. I stand corrected.

I thought the performance of YoYoMa and Kathryn Stott was superb and the way they interact musically throughout each piece with their dynamics and phrasing, was awesome. This was my first time at the Kimmel Center and it will not be my last, this place is beautiful!!

Fabulous performances from both artists!

The first encore was a cello transcription of Geroge Gershwin's Prelude No. 1.

gah! Nothing about the music. So lucky to hear in person, but where is the passion??? I have just listened to Night of the Flying Horses for the 5th time now, having just discovered it yesterday, and I am enflamed!!!

Anyway, I was so moved, I decided to find a fan-blog site, just to say something to someone, who could possibly understand the magic of the moment I just experienced. Is it here? eh, who knows.

In any case, the need to communicate has now passed. Back to listening. ;)
