These two amazing jazz orchestras braved a stormy Friday night to bring New Orleans-style jazz to Philadelphia. The New Orleans Jazz Orchestra was founded in 2002 by Irwin Mayfield, and he and the NOJO have acted as cultural ambassadors in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. The Preservation Hall Jazz Band is resident in one of the most revered landmarks in New Orleans. What did you think of their performance this Friday?
Watching the Preservation Hall Jazz Band was a Mardi Gras experience in Verizon Hall - complete with a parade around the room, strutters waving hankies and twirling umbrellas.
It makes you wonder why the news crews don't capture these sorts of great feel-good moments, instead of filling our television screens with fearsome images.
Turn off the news. Get up and dance.
Amen!
