To all of those out there who are considering applying for an internship, stop considering and just apply!
I've had a lot of fun experiencing the real "office/cubical" side of life that I'd never really done before.
I can only speak for the Web Internship though, I didn't really do any others.
What's involved, you ask?
Well, you apply for the internship and then get called in for an interview with Evelyn Taylor, who is the Web Manager and Photographer. Evelyn is really nice and a lot of fun to work with, so don't be nervous during your interview!
You'll get a cubby hole in the marketing department, which is also a lot of fun, because you hear all of them on the phone all the time, interacting with the patrons.
Every time you go to work, the first person you will see is Marian, who is sitting at the front desk. She's really nice and always has treats by her table. She will brighten your day. :)
What about the work?
Here's a list of what I've done at the Kimmel, not just Web stuff:
Update and input events into EventDB.
Monthy Reports
Weekly TMS Reports
Build Press pages
Use photoshop to edit images for press/web
Flickr
Edit/Update information on site
Volunteer for Academy events
Covered for Marian's lunch break *I only did this once. Another intern took over*
Research information
Attended 2 meetings
Took pictures for a Ray Charles Event in Liberty Plaza
and... Whatever else there is to do, really.
It might look like a lot work, but if you put your mind to it, you could do a lot of assignments in 1 hour. Most are fun and interesting. You'll find out the real inner workings of the site.
Good luck to all who are applying! I hope you get it!
If there are any questions, go ahead and post a comment and I will try to answer them.
And, I have to mention, our intern also helped with this blog by making sure spam comments never appeared on the live site. I'm still so grateful!
Cherie was an oustanding intern. Her above anecdotes are greatly appreciated, as was all of her hard work and attention to detail. Thanks for a terrific fall, Cherie!
