Emmylou Harris with Teddy Thompson, October 15th

emmylou.jpgEmmylou Harris is a twelve-time Grammy winner. She's contributed to the recent bluegrass revival, and she has performed with artists like Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Pete Seeger and Judy Collins. She's also just released a CD of duets with Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits. Opening her show tonight is Teddy Thompson, son of British folk-rock icons Richard and Linda Thompson. How was the show?

Last night's concert was just plain sweet. It wasn't loud rock n' roll or blaring horns - just a very pleasant, laid-back way to enjoy an evening of country music. I've seen Emmylou a number of times over the years and she always comes across as the genuine article. Understated and quick to credit others when credit is due, she remains one of country's best songwriters.

Excellent back-up ensemble and a gently polished act.

Teddy Thompson held his own as an opening act. With echoes of his father's voice, he held the center of the stage well as a solo act.

I continue to be impressed with Verizon Hall's ability to support a wide breadth of musical styles - from symphonic music to a solo performer. As Emmylou herself said, "This has been an extraordinary place to play. It really does sound good!"

Sounds like a great concert. 'Red Dirt Girl' is my favourite. That's the song that really made me take note. Great vocals and suburb understated guitar.
