For the Archives

On April 11th, the Library of Congress announced its annual selection of 50 sound recordings for the National Recording Registry. This is a relatively new effort by the LOC, mandated by the 2000 National Recording Preservation Act. The Library is responsible for "annually selecting recordings for the registry that are “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant." Now that the selections have been made, the LOC must find the best existing copies of each recording, preserve the originals, and digitize them. This year's selections include Mahalia Jackson, Stevie Wonder, the first official transatlantic phone conversation, the Modesto High School band, the radio broadcast of the Joe Louis vs. Max Schmeling fight, and Sonic Youth. The Library of Congress is accepting nominations for the 2006 selections through July 1, 2006. What would you nominate and what selections from this year's class do you like?
