The music that gets the most press in Detroit is Motown, so it's easy to forget that Detroit has been host to one of the largest jazz festivals in North America. Detroit was home to legendary jazz clubs, one of which—the Graystone—has become a museum dedicated to the history of jazz in this city and in the U.S. Tonight, Geri Allen with her special guest Ravi Coltrane, will try to recreate that memorable sound for Kimmel Center audiences.
What was your take on this concert? Have you been to either concert honoring jazz in Chicago or New Orleans?
Geri has prodigious technique and a style of playing that draws on a deep well of resources it seems to me. Her own trio is tight as could be, just wonderful (if a somewhat frenetic drummer however) and seems Ravi is getting more and more relaxed with each visit here, almost more comfortable in his own skin. His fingers are really beginning to fly, not with his dad's fury, but man he can play!
Did you catch him waving to his kid in the front row?!?!
Thanks to all who braved the not-quite-yet blizzard on Saturday night, well worth the trip I would think?
