Pretentious Performers

So last Thursday, Lady Sovereign, the British flow-stress deemed the next best thing to hit hip-hop since Charlie Robot dropped his eponymous dance onto the mainstream via “Soul Train,” made a lot of enemies in Philadelphia. After much anticipation and hype over her performance at Philly’s own Silk City, the newest jewel in Jay-Z’s crown left after one rhyme. According to audience goers, the intimate venue wasn’t to her liking and the speakers were “Wallmart.” Fans who waited for hours in the cold to get through the doors didn’t find much warmth inside after all.

A similar situation happened at the Kimmel about a month ago. Gospel music’s main-man Richard Smallwood returned to Philly for what was hoped as one of the best gospel shows to hit the KC stage, and after 40 minutes left eager audience members hungry for more. AND when he was onstage, left most of the performance up to his entourage rather than delivering what HE was hired to do: perform. This time though, no explanation. Just a lot of dumbfounded staff members and angry Philadelphians gypped out of a show because for some reason the artist didn’t feel like doing their job.

What if a 9-5’er did that? One word: fired. No matter how much talent, promise or hype an accountant has and/or receives, they’d get the boot. So why do these performers, and many others who have pulled the same stunt, still receive the praise and loyalty they don’t deserve? Personally, I just don’t get it.

Nice post, but do you really want to say "gypped?"
From the word Gypsy.

Oh, come on, if we're going to do away with words based on their etymology, then I want "hysterical" gone since it refers to the insanity caused by possessing a uterus.
