PHILADANCO, December 16th–18th

Posted at December 16, 2005 03:16 PM in Dance , Holiday .

This is the first 'Danco performance at the Kimmel Center this season, and it has a special holiday theme. Daniel Ezralow's Xmas Philes was choreographed with the dancers of Philadanco as a non-traditional celebration of the holidays. The first half of the program features a company premiere of Ezralow's Pulse.

I am continually amazed by this plucky, talented company. Tonight's performance showcased them in a modern piece, a sensual ballet and a holiday romp danced to jazz, funk, country, folk and a wee bit of hip hop.

The dancers were at home no matter the genre and perform with a joy that is infectious. No doubt that the 'Danco energy' comes from founder Joan Meyers Brown who, for 40 years, has been teaching, mentoring and mothering hundreds of dancers. At Friday's school matinee there was the same commitment to every step to every body extension. The sold out student house witnessed passion, personality and honesty. Philly is blessed.

This was the most fun I've had in a long time. The first two pieces were beautiful- not to mention exhausting! I don't know how the performers were so graceful with swiffer dusters on their feet, but they sure pulled it off and then some. Xmas Philes was a delight and I look forward to more DANCO performaces to come!
