Yup, that’s what I said, a “haiku” contest, seriously. Newspapers, magazines, TV and radio stations, everyone loves to do end of year “Top 100” or “Best of 2005” round-up stories.
Here’s your chance to get in on the act, and win free tickets to boot!
Send us your favorite Kimmel Center Presents performance of the season, expressed in Haiku, and win a free pair of tickets to the Gary Burton/Brad Mehldau performance at the Kimmel Center on Friday January 27, 2006.
Submissions must be received by January 15, 2006 and will be judged by our Kimmel Center Panel of Haiku Experts based on originality, expression, humor, style, adherence to the strict code of haiku form, or even the creative use of new forms! Performances must have taken place at the Kimmel Center from January 1, 2005-December 31, 2005. In the event of a tie, Kimmel Center judges reserve the right to award more than one pair of tickets to multiple winners. Winners will be announced on the blog on January 17.
For those of you who do not have a clue how to do this, here’s an excellent resource:
To get folks started, here’s my contribution (attempt?) from the Wu Man performance on November 10, 2005:
a string loudly plucked
echoes of war through the air
journey softly west
You can either adhere to the traditional 5-7-5 rule, or break through that barrier to be more creative!
What an inspired idea! Since I offered to be a judge, I'll share my Haiku freely and non-competitively:
anciet tongues revived
Aztec, Mayan muses sigh
boho goddess reigns
My favorite concert this season featured Lila Downs and her fantastic band.
A little Jill Scott
A sample of "Iron Man."
Roots rocked as I slept.
oh man i hope i can win with this:
ruptures in hot slurs
streakes in cool trumpet improv

drink more, please sing more
How do you make the songs yours?
the wig, the glitter
I became an adoring Kiki fan after the Kiki & Herb show in October. That Bright Eyes song about being "glad I didn't die before I met you" will NEVER be the same again. It was the hardest I've laughed in a long time.
Oh, Kiki & Herb-
A song by Dan Fogelberg?
Men in drag are fun!

all wonderful submissions
i hope more coming!
