Richard Smallwood and Vision with The Dixie Hummingbirds, November 4th

Posted at November 4, 2005 05:00 PM in Philly Local , Pop .

Washington, D.C. has already hosted two "Richard Smallwood Days." Richard Smallwood has been honored with Grammys, a Dove award and has been inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame. His music has been recorded by Destiny's Child, Whitney Houston and Boyz II Men. Tonight, local favorites, The Dixie Hummingbirds, known as gospel music's Iron Men because of their 75-year performing history, will join Smallwood in Verizon Hall. Did they lift your spirits? Have you gone to see the new mural across from the old Met Concert Hall?

The Dixie Hummingbirds were wonderful.
Very diappointed in Richard Smallwood.

His concert was short and abrupt. I've had the tickets for some time and looked forward seeing and hearing Richard Smallwood. Enjoy his music
very disappointment in the show.

Ms. Burrell:

I was equally disturbed and disappointed at the brevity of Mr. Smallwood’s performance. We expect of our artists nothing less than the highest quality performance and a standard set length. All of the over 400 concerts we have presented since our opening have provided that - up until last Friday. I will take the liberty of forwarding your complaint directly to Mr. Smallwood’s management so that they are aware of the ill will their actions have created.

I apologize for your disappointing experience at one of our performances. I hope you will consider visiting us for another performance sometime soon. Please be reassured that you will find great, satisfying entertainment at Philadelphia’s premiere performing arts center.

Many thanks for your comments.

hi can you tell me if richard smallwood is alive? i heard that he died sometime last year.

Surprisingly while seraching the internet I just happened to run across this blog today and had to respond. First of all I am NOT dead and am very much alive. I'm not sure where that came from..smile.

Secondly, last year at the Kimmel Center was a great opportunity and certainly it was a pleasure for me to be there. I spent a great part of my childhood in Philly growing up over on Westminster Ave. I also grew up on the Hummingbirds and was elated and honored to share the stage with them. But to the atendees who were disappointed, I would like to apologize. I always try to stay in the time frame that I'm alloted. So I'm very consious of time as I understand the cost of going overtime. My personal assistant signaled to me that my time was up which is why I left when I did. So I was under the impression that i had no more time to minister.

Also right before coming to Phiadlephio on that night I had been informed that my Mother wasn't expected to live. In fact she passed less than a month after that particular concert. So ministering that night was extremely hard for me. Although ministry is my calling and what I was put on this planet for, that night was the hardest in my life for me. Please know that many times when something is disatisfactory to the audience, there are extenuating circumstances. Please accept my apology to those who were disappointed. I pray that I can come to minister again at some point. Know that I appreciate everyone's support down thru the years and I will continue to do my best to hopefullly be a blessing to others through the music that God has given me.

peace and love
Richard Smallwood

I love this Anointed group and thank God for them. I especially like the "Anthem of Praise" selection. I was a musician for 10 of the earlier years of my life and have never heard a composition quite like that. Excellent! I believe if I ever had the opportunity to hear the group perform, however long or short that song would really Bless me. I actually woke up to that song this morning and forgot I had a medical procedure the day before that required absolute bedrest. It just fills you up and you can't possibly sit much less sit still. I have searched the internet and the Richard Smallwood website hoping to find any upcoming performances in the metro DC area (I live in Maryland) but I wasn't able to find anything. I would love to attend even a church program where the group will perform. Please email any upcoming performances to us_vi@yahoo.com. Thanks, Stacy

Growing up in Los Angeles, I have been blessed with the opportunity to see and hear the very best and most gifted gospel artists, including Rev. James Cleveland, The Mighty Clouds of Joy, and Billy Preston etc. Returning to DC in 1970 I began to follow what has become the most renowned musical genius of our times, Dr. Richard Smallwood. I look forward to seeing him and Vision at the Three Little Bakers Theater in June 2007, Wilmington Delaware. I can't think of anyone else at this time in life that I would actually go and see "live". He has such an incomparable ministry. I cannot miss this opportunity for another blessing.
