Hilary Hahn, violin, November 20th

Posted at November 20, 2005 12:00 PM in Classical .

Hilary Hahn began attending The Curtis Institute of Music when she was only 10 years old, and she made her major orchestra debut just eighteen months later. This afternoon's performance includes a work by Ysaÿe, who taught Hahn's violin mentor at Curtis, Jascha Brodsky. The most recent piece on Hahn's online journal details her preparation of that piece and others in this afternoon's concert. Have you seen Hilary Hahn before this afternoon? What did you think of this show?

I thought that Hilary Hahn had a great performance! I loved the Ysaye and the Beethoven.

This was my first classical concert, and I'm not very familiar with the music. I did prefer the second half of Hahn's program--I wasn't quite up to the challenge of the Ysaye and the Enescu. I did really enjoy the Milstein piece, especially after reading the notes about Paginini.

I wasn't expecting encores, but it was a nice surprise. The last piece, the tango was lovely. Hilary Hahn has quite a stage presence too. All the walking back and forth after a piece concludes is a little strange, but I guess that is customarily the way to acknowledge the applause.

I liked the Ysaye and the Milstein the best, and both the encores were nice. I found myself paying more attention to the piano part in the Beethoven than the violin... Ms Zhu is a remarkable musician as well.

I have been playing violin for 27 years and going to violin concerts for a long time also. I went to hear Hilary Hahn play with the Madison Symphony, she played Paganini's 1st violin concerto, (one of the most difficult pieces for violin), it was the most amazing thing I've ever heard! Hilary did a documentary with Itzhak Perlman where they talked about the worlds' greatest violinists, if Hilary isn't one of the worlds' greatest I don't know who is.
