As I strolled into the guitar section at Sam Ashe in commercially picturesque King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, the hairs on the back of my neck stood at attention with excitement. After many years of talking about the prospect, I ws finally going to take my initial baby steps toward becoming the rock god I knew I was destined to be. As I fancy myself a purist...mostly for the pretense of it...I passed by the sexy paint jobs on the electric power-axes and chose instead to begin my educational journey with the soft wooden tones of a used accoustic. After all, every rock and roll legend must crawl before he can run through the fields of groupies and back stage passes.
I opened the door to the accoustic section, and I heard a beautiful song being strummed just around the corner. After a bit of looking around, I heard the mysterious player around the corner tear into a stunning solo which, as a babe in the musical woods, I needed to see with my own eyes. I rounded the corner I was horrified to see that the object of my admiration stood not 4 feet tall, and was flanked by his mother and father asking how he liked the action compared to his "other" guitars. My heart sank. I was, am, and will be for a while...a 28 year old beginner guitar student. And my fingertips are throbbing.
Ladies and gentlemen, I am a lover of music. My many attempts as a musician in my youth fell to my inability to discipline myself enough to practice regularly. I lament that only now have I developed the desire and strength to embrace and enjoy the process of learning a musical instrument. It is my sincere hope that I have not arrived too late.
So now I reach out to those of you who have been musicians for years, and ask for any advice you may have to offer a doddering old guitar newcomer.
Don't fret! Ha ha ha
If you find a good teacher and work serious, you can become a pretty decent guitarist.
Hey David, and John...as Vonski said the other night at his concert when asked what advice he had as the elder statesman for the up-and-comers and young'ens..."Simple...Practice" no profound statements, no complexities..."Practice"!!!!!!
enroll in my guitar ninja dojo.
