The Bad Plus have posted an invitational on their blog, comparing bands to writers. The first 61 are from the band's recent train ride in Ireland, and they're welcoming submissions from their readers.
I love the reasoning for this one:
The rationale of these parings could be specific or intuitive. In musical alphabetical order it begins with linking AC/DC to Julia Childs. Rationale: they are both extremely popular, are reliable craftsmen, and exude a charismatic, “come on and get it” quality.
My favorite might just be "The Doors--Jack Kerouac." The Lizard King and Mister On the Road: I'm inclined to file both under "overgrown adolescent blowhards." A few others that seem right on-target, "Madonna--Anne Rice," "Bob Dylan--Ernest Hemingway." The pairing of "Elvis Costello--William Shakespeare" needs some explanation for me, because I don't see that one. And "Greenday--Dan Brown" seems like backlash from hearing "When September Ends" on the radio for the hundredth time in a day.
Apropos of our Friday night show, "Bright Eyes--Jonathan Safran Foer" makes me wonder if the person who submitted this one thinks both might just be creations of their respective public relations teams. Did you find any you particularly liked? Or thought were way too harsh/too generous?
