What's on right now?

In the spirit of the moment, it seems appropriate to share what I'm listening to right now. As I type. At work. First, though, a few things about what it's NOT ... it's not the latest release from the hottest band (like Magic Numbers) ... it's not an old classic from a legendary trailblazer (like Dylan) ... it's not a guilty pleasure (like Destiny's Child) ... and some of it's not even in English.

It's Zap Mama's sultry, moody, captivating 1997 album 7. It's a stunner filled with groovy vocal percussion and poetry, and loaded with catchy melodies. I'm not even sure what they are singing about most of the time, but it never matters.

Zap Mama was originally an acapella female group. Their first three records were wonderful, but on 7 they really embraced adding layers of music to their intricate vocals and every move is right on.

I've listened to this record a lot over the years since it came out. I saturate myself with it, and then put it away for awhile. Then I tend to forget about it, which is great, because when I rediscover it, it's like Christmas all over again. Like today. In fact, someone just caught me doing the closest thing I can do to dancing in my office chair.

If you're going to download one song from this record, I suggest the very first one: "Belgo Zairoise"

What are YOU listening to right now??

Thanks for the tip! After a quick google to learn more, there is an NPR interview with her from 2004 that's really great. AND you're totally right on the great chair dancin' music.....

Well for some reason the link to the interview didn't come up in the last post. For those interested: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=4124946
