I'm still reeling from the impression that Alejandro Escovedo made on me last Sunday when he opened the concert for Los Lobos. He is definitely a musician who needs to be in front of more people. The unusual instrumentation - violin, two cellos and two guitars, plus Alejandro's vocals - was at times haunting, beautiful, lyrical and many times driven with great force. It made me think of another great band we've had here twice before - Ethel. Check 'em out. They're a quartet of impeccable musicians who are willing to try most anything. But back to Escovedo - I hear that he will be coming out with a recording soon using the same quintet that appeared at the Kimmel. Let's hope sooner rather than later.
