The Roots have come a long way from the principal's office at CAPA--all the way to Verizon Hall. How was it seeing them perform with Jill Scott? Did you stick around for the dance party with guest DJ ?uestlove? And what about the other bands--Shawn Hewitt and the National Strike, Deerhoof and TV on the Radio? If you liked them, make sure you check out Jeff's post about where you can hear more of their music.
Two nights, two stellar performances! As much as I appreciated the opportunity to sit in the audience and hear the legendary voice of Tony Bennett on Thursday night, the ability to experience the vibe on Friday was extraordinary. Going in I wondered what the atmosphere would be like. A patron in my mid-20's, I’ve seen many performances at the KC and never have I felt the place literally shake. Tonight, the musicians and the crowd made that happen. I’ll leave it to others to describe the groups, provide the set lists, and rate what was heard. As for me, I’d like to thank those at the Kimmel, the Roots, and all involved for pulling off the show. I’m just thrilled to have been in the crowd, in my favorite hometown venue, and look forward to the jazz and classical seasons ahead!
i'm suprised the glass dome didn't fly off the place. my personal favorites: tv on the radio and jill scott. the roots, of course, were amazing as usual with everything from motown to ozzy osborne. oh and the brass band procession and recession into and out of the hall: un-freakin-believable. thanks to EVERYONE at the kimmel and with the roots for making this happen. i never thought i would see a dance-off in the plaza of the Center, but tonight it happened. to quote ms. scott, "oh say can you see." i think we saw it all tonight.
I've heard/seen Verizon Hall shake before (at shows like Todd Rundgren/Joe Jackson, Alanis Morissette, and even Elton John), but NEVER have I seen anything like last night's Roots show. It was amazing. I'll admit to not knowing much about the Roots, except that they are hugely respected musicians/music-makers, and that Philly is VERY proud to call them homeboys ... so I didn't know what to expect from the concert. But ... wow. Every moment was impresive in every possible way. Jill Scott is an angel ... and the marching band provided the perfect bookends. Great way to help kick off the season!
2500 people at the Kimmel doing a call and response with Blackthought shouting "Stay cool, mother f**ckers, stay cool"
The best show I have seen in years.
Let's see, how many "samples" did I hear Friday night: Kool & the Gang, Ray Charles, Jimi Hendrix (or was that Buddy Guy?), Black Sabbath (!), Miles Davis (electric), Sly, Beyonce, dozens more, and not a turntable or laptop in sight - just 11+ slammin' musicians. And the Nawlins second line - Hallelujah and pass the gumbo! Why aren't these guys as big as Outkast? No offense Big Boi & 'Dre - love you too!
Thanks for a great night. Stay cool motherf**kers, stay cool...
thanx to The Roots for an unforgettable night. As soon as Riq, ?uest and the TBC Horns marched in you know it was ON. best show I've seen to date bar none.
Shawn Hewitt has a bright future ahead of him, methinks.. I wish you could have gone till 5am. Was anyone else here on the street for the aftershow jam?
and yes, contrary to the haters out there, you CAN say STAY COOL MOTHERF**KERS STAY COOL on the Kimmel Center Blog. It's lyrical content, ya know.
TBC Horns were off the hook! I read in Philly.com that the Roots might be recording with them for the new album, maybe even helping them relocate to Philadelphia! All of those young guys are Katrina evacuees... The Roots are 100% genuine and a jewel in Philadelphia's crown, thank U Kimmel Center for having them play the best house in town, FINALLY!
That show was amazing. I was behind the stage in the front row and got the best sounding percussions and bass ever. The show was amazing and you could tell the Roots love to play in philly. The impromptu concert held outside after everything was done was insane to! The kimmel center is a magical and beautiful place where more exciting artists should play, especially the roots!
- I'm like young LL, cuz I'm hard as hell
Makin' n----z screw face like Gargamel!
