There is sooooo much music out there. So much that there is a page in the front of my day planner graffitied with names of artists that need to be checked out and read up on. Recently though my schedule hasn't permitted much time for leisure listening or avid review, and that's where I implore your help faithful blogger. What are you listening to and, more importantly, why? Any genre from any time is fair game. I just need to update my collection ASAP.
Also, below is the ever-growing day planner list. I would be much appreciative of anyone who can shed some light. Please help! My ipod and I thank you.
1. Iron & Wine
2. Sleater Kinney
3. Redhead Betty Takeout
4. Zolof
5. Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
6. Hustle & Flow
7. David Mead
8. White Stripes (new album)
9. Sufjan Stevens
10. Scout Niblett
11. Cordora
12. The Knitters
13. Milton Nascimento
14. Eels
15. Leela James
16. Serial Underground
17. Dr. John
18. Marion Williams
19. The Mosquitoes
20. Neutral Milk Hotel
Neutral Milk Hotel: you need to download "The Aeroplane Over The Sea" in its entirety and listen to each track, in order. There was a cool local tribute to this work a few months ago - performing the entire suite @ the North Star Bar or something, missed it though.
Sleater-Kinney - download anything off their earlier angry "Dig Me Out" (like "Words & Guitar)or "The Hot Rock". For more recent feminine angst try "Oh!" off of "One Beat"
You can move Milton Nascimento to the top of your list! The Brazilian vocalist is simultaneously ethereal and earthy. If you can find the Wayne Shorter CD he's featured on your ipod might just get stuck there.
Sleater-Kinney's "Dig Me Out" and "Call the Doctor" are stll my faves.. if you can see them live, do it.
Sufjan Stevens is playing tonight @ the TLA .. it's sold out, but opening the show is a Philly-based songwriter named Denison Witmer. You should definitely put Denison on your list. I first heard his CD at a local coffeehouse where his brother works as a barista.. I immediately rushed the bar and demanded to know what was playing over the sound system. "oh, that's my brother, Denison. Want an advance CD?" Turns out this is Denison's 3rd or 4th release, and it's good.. he's been playing some of the R5 showcases in town and even has some play from Starbucks/Hear Music.
Jeff, I agree, S-K live is AWESOME!! I've seen them at the Troc about 3 times - so great.
A hot new band to check out: Tom Tom Club
This group of down to earth midwestern boys really know their way around a fiddle. And they still manage to get me to shake it; in my room, with the blinds parted just enough so the construction workers across the street can't focus on their shoveling.
